Standing at 5199m (17057.09 ft) is highest mountain of the land, Mount Kenya. Mt Kenya is the highest Mountain in Kenya and the second highest in Africa.

The mountain has 3 glaciated peaks; point Lenana at 4,985m (16354.9 ft) reached by a free climb with proper gear, Batian peak at 5,199m (17057.09 ft) and Nelion at 5,188m ( 17021 ft) which are only manageable with a technical climb.

Mount Kenya is the centre piece of Mount Kenya National park and its listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its unique geology and natural history. This makes it among the top destinations in Kenya and Africa

Itinerary

Day 1

Depart Nairobi at 6:30am for Sirimon gate with one of our Team Leaders. The hike starts from the Sirimon Park gate (2660m). From the gate, trek up through magnificent mountain forest, bamboo and giant heather zone before reaching the high-altitude moorland and to our first hut Old Moses Hut 3300m ASL for evening tea dinner and overnight stay. This is a gentle trek that takes 3-4 hours gaining an elevation of 680m. From Old Moses camp you can see the summits of Batian and Nelion peaks. We shall have a stopover

Day 2

After a heavy breakfast, Hike to Shipton’s camp (4200m ASL). Distance to cover on day 2 will be 15kms through Likii Valley in the mid-morning a water break, track crossing Ontulili River before turning right contouring through the Moorland and crossing Likii North River and Mackinders Valley, a great day of scenery and magical photo shoots. There are killer & panoramic views of the peaks from the view point. A nourishing lunch will be served by the Likii River and continue to Shipton’s camp at 4200m Evening tea, snacks, dinner and overnight stay.
This camp is a surreal setting below the towering peaks and glacier.

Resident population is of Rock hyrax and sun birds

Day 3Acclimatization day

We shall spend this day acclimatizing at the base camp. Climb to Oblong & Nanyuki tarn view-point. Time Permitting, descend further for a glimpse of the other side of the mountain with excellent views of Batian, Nelion & Point John not forgetting the Diamond collier a well as the Amphi theatre. About 6Kms on this day.
Overnight: Shipton’s Camp.

Day 4

The day starts very early morning at 0230Hrs, to allow you attempt reaching the Peak by Sunrise (Alpine ascent to the highest Peak -Pt. Lenana (4985m ASL). This entails four hours of stiff walking to the summit. This will be the most challenging bit of the Mountain Trek and will require a strong mind to reach the summit. Upon reaching the peak, celebrate your achievement with the rest of the team, taking iconic pictures. Afterward at approximately 0700Hrs, start the descend back to Mintos Hut where we shall have breakfast. Later on, we will have our lunch at Road Head descend further to the Mt Kenya Meru Bandas’ where you will enjoy Dinner, a fire place, hot showers and overnight. You Will do about 25 KM on the 4th day.

Day 5

The day starts at 0800Hrs after a sumptuous breakfast. After breakfast depart Mt Kenya Meru Bandas, a 4 Hrs walk out of the Park via Chogoria. Kindly note that we shall trek the first 10 Km to be picked by our Tour Van for the final 10 Kms out of the park), as you drive back to Nairobi, ending the thrilling fitness challenge.

Items for Mountain Kenya Hike

  1. A Sleeping Bag.
  2. Sun Screen.
  3. Sun Glasses.
  4. Good Hiking shoes preferably boots with good threads to avoid sliding especially on the summit day. Water proof, strong, light- big enough to allow multiple layers of socks.
  5. 2 bags one for carrying your items plus the sleeping bag to be carried by a porter plus a good back pack for your personal effects, your money, snacks, water during the hikes, which the clients carry for themselves.
  6. An extra pair of shoes to be worn at our rooms preferably rubber or sports shoes, it gives your feet a break from the boots.
  7. At least 5 Tee shirts for changing after each hike since they become too wet with sweat. Preferably long sleeves & synthetic.
  8. A rain jacket/poncho just in case it rains during the hike.
  9. A Head light or a normal torch with spare batteries.
  10. Warm clothes Jackets, and pants preferably synthetic & waterproof.
  11. 5 pairs of comfortable trekking socks. (synthetic or wool) .
  12. Gloves (both woolen and waterproof).
  13. Sun glasses and Sun Screen.
  14. A reusable Water Bottle. (1 to 2 Litres preferably).
  15. Energy sweets and snacks.
  16. Toiletries (include wet wipes).
  17. Balaclava.
  18. Hiking pole/ walking stick (Most people hiking without them, these are optional from one client to another).
